Permanent Research Position in Space Weather (2.2.1-195/17) Stop date: 18 August.

Permanent research position at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in the field of magnetosphere – ionosphere coupling with focus on space weather

Applications are invited for a permanent research position in the field of magnetosphere – ionosphere coupling with focus on space weather. A successful candidate will for the first four years work for full time in a Space Weather project funded by MSB (the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency). The project team includes researchers from IRF, Stockholm University and FOI (The Swedish Defence Research Agency). The goal of the project is to better understand the mechanisms leading to strong geomagnetically-induced currents (GICs) affecting man-made equipment on the ground and to make more accurate prognoses. Later on, the successful candidate is expected to continue and strengthen the space weather research at IRF.

Candidates should have a solid scientific background based on several years of experience in magnetospheric physics and a good understanding of the coupling processes in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system governing space weather. Experience in advanced analysis of relevant multiple instruments and multi spacecraft data is a requirement. Experience with space weather analysis tools and models is a strong advantage. Interest and experience in the international coordination of related scientific activities will also be considered an asset.

The position is located at the IRF office in Uppsala, Sweden, but the location at the IRF headquarters in Kiruna, Sweden, can also be considered depending on the candidate’s interests. The research will start as soon as the successful candidate’s present position allows.

Applications should include a CV (with description of previous post-doctoral and scientific positions and/or similar relevant research work), a letter (max 2 pages) stating the applicant’s relevant research experience and plans for development space weather research at IRF as well as names and contact information for three professional references.
