Three PhD students in Space Physics (dnr 2.2.1-12/19)
The positions are related to studies of space plasmas
Applications are invited for PhD students to study space plasma regions of fundamental importance, such as magnetic reconnection sites, shocks, turbulence regions, ionospheres and kinetic processes there.
We are looking for students in each of the following science topics:
- Characterization of energy conversion and identification of the mechanisms of particle acceleration operating in turbulent layers formed at fronts of plasma jets, based on experimental data from the NASA multi-spacecraft MMS mission.
- Understanding of electron heating and energetic electron generation at collisionless shocks, in particular resolving the mechanisms of the non-adiabatic processes using MMS data.
- Understanding Saturn’s ionosphere and the influence of the rings on the ionization balance using models and data acquired during the Grand Finale of the NASA Cassini mission.
The positions are available at the Uppsala office at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, starting at the latest in the second half of 2019 for a total duration of four years.
The PhD students will belong to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and must therefore fulfill the university requirements. Doktorander i rymdfysik för studier av rymdplasma (dnr 2.2.1-12/19)
Institutet för rymdfysik i Uppsala söker doktorander för studier inom grundläggande rymdfysik, såsom magnetisk omkoppling och chocker; turbulenta regioner, jonosfärer och kinetiska processer i dessa.
Vi söker doktorander för vart och ett av följande ämnen:
- Karaktärisering av energiomvandling och identifiering av mekanismerna bakom partikelacceleration i turbulenta plasmastrålfrontar, baserat på experimentell data från NASA:s multifarkostprojekt MMS.
- Utifrån MMS data, detaljstudera elektronupphettningen och bildandet av energirika elektroner vid kollisionslösa chocker, och i synnerhet söka förklara mekanismerna bakom icke-adiabatiska processer.
- Utifrån modellering och data från Cassini studera Saturnus jonosfär och i synnerhet försöka förstå hur Saturnus ringar påverkar jonisationsbalansen.
Doktoranden/doktoranderna anställs för fyra år vid Institutet för rymdfysik, med lokaler i Ångströmlaboratoriet, Uppsala, med början senast under andra halvåret 2019.
Vad avser forskarutbildning tillhör doktoranden Institutionen för fysik och astronomi vid Uppsala universitet, och måste alltså uppfylla kraven för antagning till denna utbildning. Information om forskarutbildningen finns på http://www.physics.uu.se/ och http://www.teknat.uu.se/.
