Software Engineer

Do you want to work with programming for spacecraft missions in a team at the forefront of research?

Description

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Uppsala is looking for a software engineer to develop ground segment software for space instruments. Your main area of work will be the development and maintenance of software for the ground systems and archiving for different instruments developed at IRF. Our group, consisting of engineers and researchers from several countries, has extensive experience in developing and using scientific instruments to measure plasma density, density fluctuations, electric fields, and plasma temperature on spacecraft (e.g., Cluster, MMS, Swarm, Cassini, Rosetta, Solar Orbiter, JUICE, and Comet Interceptor).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor level in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or other equivalent competence that the employer deems comparable.
  • Experience in programming in Matlab and Python.

The following is considered a merit:

  • Experience in using Docker or similar software packaging tools.
  • Experience in producing and maintaining software documentation.
  • Knowledge of programming in C.
  • Experience in software development for ground systems for space plasma measurements.
  • Experience in the operation of spacecraft instruments, i.e., commanding and interacting with spacecraft instruments using CCSDS described standards.
  • Knowledge of NASA's CDF standard (Common Data Format) and/or NASA's PDS4 (Planetary Data System version 4).

In addition to this, good communication and coordination skills are necessary as the work takes place in a small software team at IRF, in collaboration with scientists, several international software teams, and in close contact with ESA. The work is mostly carried out in English, so it requires very good skills in both written and spoken English. As we are a Swedish workplace, knowledge of Swedish, or a willingness to learn, is considered of merit.
