VIKING

About the layouts.

  1. All Viking data used in this web display are in IDFS format. There is one data file per orbit and all files are stored in a compressed format using "gzip". Files are uncompressed when a plot request is made. Plots are created using the SDDAS software. It will take longer to create a data plot if the files must first be uncompressed. Therefore, if one looks at a different time period within the same orbit, the generation of the data plot should be slightly faster since there is no more need to uncompress the data file. When the local disk where the uncompressed data files are stored becomes filled, the uncompressed files are removed to make space for new ones. Therefore, the length of time that uncompressed files will be available depends highly on the availability of disk space and the amount of usage of this web site.
  2. Layout choices.
    • ESP1 and PISP1/2no_pa layouts are best suited to browse through ESP1 and PISP1/2 data. Those layouts do not contain pitch angles and will therefore not take as much time to be generated and displayed.
    • ESP1/ESP5 layout. Note that the range for Eflux (ergs/(cm**2str-s-keV)) units for the ESP5 and ESP1 data is not identical. ESP5 data range between 5 keV - 148 keV.
    • PISP1/2 layout. Note that the range for Eflux units for PISP1/2 is identical.
    • ESP1, PISP1/2 can be considered as the standard layout. It combines ESP1 and PISP1/2 data.
  3. Unit ranges.
Since a specific range has been chosen for the Eflux unit for all plots, it will not always be suitable for very different periods of the data. Orbit 469, which shows good cusp data has been used to define the ranges. It is possible to create a customized layout with different ranges upon request.
