A balloon-borne telescope system for optical remote sensing of planetary atmospheres and plasmas

Dr. Makoto Taguchi
National Institute of Polar Research, Japan

It is usually essential to observe temporal progress or frequency for understanding various phenomena in the planetary atmosphere and plasma environments.
A telescope floated in the polar stratosphere can monitor a planet for more than 24 hours with better atmospheric conditions than those for a ground-based telescope, and can be developed with smaller cost than those for a huge ground-based telescope or a satellite mission.
A balloon-borne telescope system has been developed to be launched in the Arctic, most likely in Kiruna, in 2008 targeting Venus. The system, still under development, will be introduced.
