Studies of weather patterns in the summer mesopause: first simultaneous and common volume observations of the mesospheric bore in noctilucent clouds using ground-based and space measurements

The first simultaneous and common volume ground-based and space observations of the mesospheric bore in noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are considered. The two-point ground-based observations were conducted with automated digital cameras located at the Athabasca University Geophysical Observatory (Canada) on the night of 29-30 June 2012. Simultaneous temperature profiles were measured with the SABER infrared radiometer onboard the TIMED satellite.
Two different air masses with temperature difference of 20-25 K were responsible for the existence of the mesospheric bore and its front jump (soliton). The soliton demonstrated a pronounced elevation of 12 km rising up to the altitude of 96 km, whereas the NLC layer was located between 84.5 and 86.3 km. Ice particles immediately (within 1 min) sublimated at the soliton. The observed mesospheric bore closely resembled the tropospheric bore and undular tidal bore patterns on shallow rivers.
