0045 Arrival Svalbard Airport. Airportbus to Funken Hotell or Nybyen Guesthouse
By check-in there will be handed out information folders.

1030 A representative from Spitsbergen Travel AS will meet the participants and give practical information about the stay
1200-1300 Two course lunch at Funken Hotel
1300 Transfer from Funken Hotell to EISCAT, Privat arrangement.
1700 Transfer from EISCAT to Funken Hotell / Nybyen Guesthouse

Funken Hotel:
An exciting and traditional hotel! Funken Hotell can offer comfortable accommodation in single or double rooms. All rooms have bathroom, cable-TV, telephone and minibar. There is also a relax department with sauna. The modern history of Spitsbergen can literally be read on the walls of Funken Hotell. Funken is an abbreviation of Funksjonærmessa (administrative staff quarters) and was originally built for entertainment purposes and as accommodation quarters for unmarried administrative personnel for the mining company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani.
Nybyen Guest House:
Nybyen is - despite its name, which means ´New Townª - the oldest part of Longyearbyen, and was built in 1946-49 as housing for the workers. At the time, the mines in production were located in the top of Longyear valley, right by the two glaciers Larsbreen and Longyearbreen. Nybyen now holds student homes and Nybyen Guest House. Nybyen Guest House has medium standard rooms, and a total of 89 beds in both single and double rooms in 3 different barracks. The rooms have basic but cosy furniture. There are showers/WC to share in the corridors. In addition there are sitting rooms with radio and TV in each building, plus a small kitchen. Breakfast is served in Stormessa - the main mass hall - across the road. The reception is also situated here.
Boat trip to Barentsburg and Esmark Glacier:
A photo safari along bird cliffs - a breeding colony of countless polar birds. We pass the ruins of Grumant, a former Russian mining settlement, and then into Coles Bay where the Russians once had a harbour. Barentsburg is the Russian capital of Svalbard with about 800 inhabitants. There will be a guided tour in the settlement and lunch onboard before crossing the fjord to have a look at the beautiful Esmark Glacier. Drinks is not included in the price, and this you can buy onboard. They also sell chocolate, waffle and coffee/tea.
Cultural/historical meeting with Longyearbyen:
A guided tour of 3 hours in Longyearbyen and the surrounding area. Information given about the history, geology, flora, fauna, and modern society. Visits to Svalbard Museum and Svalbard Galleri. The museum is small and pleasant with a detailed and exciting collection of displays about coal mining, whale hunting, etc. Galleri Svalbard opened in March 1995, exhibiting over 40 original works by the Norwegian painter Kåre Tveter - an artist who has captured on canvas the enchanting shades of polar light. Antiquarian maps and books relevant to the cultural and historical background on Svalbard, as well as an audio-visual presentation of the seasons.
Practical advice:
On Svalbard we have the habit of taking our outdoor footwear off when we enter most public places, such as the hotel. We therefore recommend our guests to bring slippers or light indoor shoes. Furthermore, the guests should bring windproof jacket and pants, warm underwear, warm cap/mittens, gloves and solid, warm footwear for use outdoors. During summer the average temperature is 6 degrees celsius.

Arctic grilling at 78° north
Spend an evening with us along the shore of the Arctic Ocean, grilling arctic food. We will leave for Bjorndalen, and after a short hike we arrive at the shore where everything is arranged for a pleasant evening with good food and drinks, around a campfire, or in a tent. Our host will spice your meal with stories about Svalbard, and we will hear about daily life on Svalbard, historical glimpses and episodes in which polar bears are part of the picture. And all this as we enjoy the fantastic views over Isfjord. Included in our fee is transportation to and from Longyearbyen, food for grilling, and dinner drinks. Join us!
